As suspected, the piston rings were stuck. Replacing them was the right call—and with everything already apart, it made sense to install a new piston as well. The head cleaned up nicely, and the cylinder itself was in great shape—smooth, with no scoring or grooves. I gave it a light hone to refresh the surface and bring back a proper crosshatch pattern. Ring gap was checked and came in right within spec, so everything is set up well for reassembly
